UC IP policy comments

The UC IP policy is due for updating and arguably needs a major overhaul to reflect new opportunities and a more progressive strategy. This is a draft - feel free to improve.

Issues to be addressed include:

Open licensing

  • Allow and promote a more open access / open licensing approach, such as use of Creative Commons licensing.

Use of student work

  • Use of student work by staff for teaching, research, and service purposes: e.g., does a staff member (and UC) need to obtain permission from a student to pass on a copy of his/her work to another student or to make it publically available? If so, do we need/have a standard permissions form and procedure? (this issue is partly addressed in the UC copyright guidelines).

Training

"High-school teachers and college professors receive next to no training on copyright law and fair-use doctrine, a new report argues, and their students are suffering as a result."
