Thesis structure

Sections

  • Introduction
  • [Method]
  • [Results]
  • [Discussion]
  • [References]
  • [Appendices]

Chapter drafting

  • Develop a 1-2 page outline of the chapter and discuss with supervisor.
  • Include major headings (~3 to 5), each with bullet-points
  • Cite key references and include reference list
  • Include hypotheses
  • Provide estimated word counts for major sections and chapter total

IT aspects

  • Prepare thesis chapters as separate documents, with major drafts as different files (e.g., Introduction1.doc, Introduction2.doc...).
    • An alternative system is to uses a date in the title, e.g, Ch1 2008_02_28.doc, etc.
  • I will tend to comment using Comments and Tracked Changes
  • Backup, backup, backup (emailing your latest version to peers and/or supervisor is one easy way to make sure there are external copies around in case something goes pear-shaped)
