LMS

LMS stands for Learning Management System. Basically, this means a CMS (Content Management System) designed for management and sharing of electronic educational material and communication.

Products

  • There are two main free and open source LMS packages (Moodle and Sakai), with Moodle being the most popular.
  • There are several commercial, proprietary LMS packages (Blackboard, WebCT, Desire2Learn, etc.). Blackboard took over its nearest rival WebCT in 2007 and in 2008 successfully sued Desire2Learn (the next competitor) for patent violation. This has made Blackboard increasingly unpopular with many educators. It is also the most expensive LMS, but nevertheless it has the market share, although many institutions are switching to free and open source solutions.
