Description

Someone who designs websites (MSN Encarta, 7 August, 2007).

Web designers are sometimes just graphic artists, though most also write HTML.
 (www.red.net/glossary/w.php, 21 August,2007)

Web designer are responsible for creating the look and feel for World Wide Web based on client's requirements. This involves developing a graphic design that can communicate the ideas being promoted by the Website effectively. A web designer may take part in the initial planning of a Website, meeting with the client to discuss ideas for the layout and organization of the site, the types of colors or images to use (photos, illustrations, videos, etc.), and other matters concerning overall graphic design. Sometimes a web producer has already developed a basic concept for the web page. In this case it is the web designer's task to create a design that matches the producer's ideas (career.stateuniversity.com, 21 August, 2007)

While design is the art and process of combining individual elements of design (lines, shape, texture, color) into a pleasing arrangment, Web Designer is involved in  creating a single Web page or entire Web sites and may involve both the aesthetics and the mechanics of a Web site's operation although primarily it focuses on the look and feel of the Web site - the design elements. Some of the aspects that may be included in Web design or Web production are graphics and animation creation, color selection, font selection, navigation design, content creation, HTML/XML authoring, JavaScript programming, and ecommerce development. Web design is a form of electronic publishing.(about.com:desktop publishing,21 August,2007)

A person who creates a Web site. Web designers may use Web authoring software or an HTML editor to create the actual pages, or they may design the overall look and let a Webmaster do the actual coding.(encyclopedia,20 August,2007)

Web designers are responsible for the layout, visual appearance and usability of a website. This role may overlap with that of a Multimedia programmer and web architect. (15 August, 2007; Prospects, 12 August, 2007)

A Web Designer is responsible for the creation and execution of all interactive design and elements in the websites to the international highest standard for function and design (Seek, 8 August, 2007). A web designer is similar to a graphic designer. In fact, many graphic designers are web designers and vice versa. Sometimes the term web designer is used to describe a web developer, but really a web designer focuses on the user interface.

A Web Developer is responsible for the programming and functionality of the website. Once the requirements of the website have been analysed, the web developer figures out how he/she is going to integrate these requirements into the website and writes the necessary programming code (Alexandrou, 9 August, 2007), where as Web Designers focus on the user interface of the website, and are responsible for layout, colour palettes, and sometimes usability. In short, they are responsible for the visual or 'design' elements of the website. Web designers often develop some programming skills to enable them to include certain features in the interface such as roll-overs or dynamic menus. (Alexandrou, 8 August, 2007).

Web Content Publisher - Working within the Information Technology Branch of a government department to assist in redesigning the department's internet website (DCITA, 26 July, 2007) (APS Employment Gazette, 26 July, 2007)

Conceptualize, create, develop, design and produce web promotions using graphics design software. Ensure creative elements are in line with brand requirements. Interprets creative "look" of each promotion and builds/develops layouts of those materials assigned.  (Payscale.com, 21 August, 2007)
A person who designs Web pages. Usually a designer will produce a mockup of a page in a graphics application (for example, Adobe Photoshop or The GIMP). Once a design has been approved by a client the designer will produce an HTML template, CSS files and all of the images needed to produce the Web site. These files will then be passed to a Web developer or directly to the client. (Bized.ac.uk, 21 August, 2007)

Differences observed

Please see the 'Differences observed' section on Interface Designer.

http://ucspace.canberra.edu.au/x/q4AjAg

Differences observed between the advertised role for a Web Designer through recruitment agency Jigsaw Corporation and that of a Web Content Publisher through the Department of Communications, Information Technolgy and Arts.

The position of Web Content Publisher is within the Public Sector, The Australian Public Service (APS), and is offered as an APS 4 position with salary ranging from $50,824 to $54,927. The initial advertisment was posted on both the APS employment gazette and the DCITA websites. The advertisment presented a brief desription of the position along with the Job title, type, salary range, location and classification. A link was also provided to further information about the position in the form of a job information pack. the pack provided information about the role and working environment at DCITA, APS values and the Code of Conduct, the specifics of the salary package, the selection criteria and an outline of the Public Service Act 1999. (DCITA, 26 July, 2007)

The advertisment for a Web Designer is with a private organisation. The position has a salary package negotiable up to a maximum of $75,000pa, where it is presumed that the starting salary of the successful applicant is awarded based on their experience. The position is advertised as full time permanent, unlike that of the Web Content Publisher position which is advertised as a temporary 6 month contract. The advertisment for this position is available on both the Seek job website and the Jigsaw Corporation recruitment website. Both advertisments provide the same level of information and no details of the company providing the position are given unlike that of the Web Content Publisher advertisment which offers information on all aspects of the department in which the position is available. In regards to each advertisments lay out the Web Designer advertisment is of lower standard in comparison. The information given in regards to the position is not divided into subheadings nor are the main requirements highlighted in anyway.

Although both positions require demonstrated knowledge of CSS and HTML programs, as well as Microsoft software, only the Web Designer position mentions the desirability of a tertiary qualification. The Web Content Publisher position requires no academic qualifications or minimum time frame of work experience. (DCITA, 26 July, 2007) (Jigsaw Corporation, 09 August, 2007) (Seek.com.au, 7 August 2007)

Differences observed betwen Web developer/designer and - Web Development - Application Development (Gurus. com.au, 10 August 2007) are, though both jobs need preety much similiar skill requirements, yet there is a difference between their job descriptions as well as definition.

Web development is a broad term for any activities related to developing a web site for the World Wide Web or an intranet. This can include e-commerce business development, web design, web content development, client-side/server-side coding, and web server configuration. Web developers can be webmasters who handle website administration and web design as well as web application development or can simply be web application developers. Web developers are formally in charge of web development within their respective organizations or also as freelance software developers.((Wikipedia, 11 August, 2007)

A Web application or webapp is an application that is accessed via web over a network such as the Internet or an intranet. Web applications are used to implement Webmail, online retail sales, online auctions, wikis, discussion boards, Weblogs, MMORPGs and many other functions. (Wikipedia, 11 August, 2007)

The advertisement of the role of web developer is "This is a full cycle development role that will see the successful candidate: developing code, assisting in functional and technical solutions design and working with the Project Managers to produce schedules.(Gurus.com.au, 11 August, 2007)

The job advertisement of web application developer published is "The Web Engineer will report to the Technical Director and will be primarily responsible for developing applications for the website using .Net and SQL Server 2005 technologies.  The Web Engineer will also assist the content team in supporting users of the site by providing diagnostics and solutions regarding the website's technologies eg. Streaming, rendering and podcasts.  The Web Engineer will also assist the Technical Director to oversee the operations of the live website." (Gurus.com.au, 10 August 2007)

The differences between Junior Web Designer and Senior Web Designer are:

  • Junior web designer's salary is around $35,000; Senior web designer's salary is about $60,000. Therefore, the senior web designer is paid higher (Seek.com.au, 16 August, 2007)
  • Junior web designer's requirement is 1 or 2 years experiences; The senior web designer is required to have an experience about 5 years or more. (Seek.com.au, 16 August 2007)

The job advertisement from Business Catalyst Systems Pty. Ltd will be analysed and compared to the job advertisement from Hays Sales and Marketing. The following are the differences found:

  • The job offered in Business Catalyst is a full time job (Seek.com.au, 22 July, 2007), whereas the one in Hays is a permanent job with 10-month contract (CareerOne.com.au, 17 August, 2007).
  • Business Catalyst is looking for a web designer with at least 1 - 2 years web design experience, who also has decent design skills (Seek.com.au, 22 July, 2007). The job advertisement from Hays does not mention anything about work experience but it requires a skilled web designer with outstanding communications and stakeholder management skills (CareerOne.com.au, 17 August, 2007).
  • Business Catalyst is offering a salary range of $40,000 to $50,000 (Seek.com.au, 22 July, 2007) while a salary range of $65,000 to $75,000 is being offered from Hays Sales and Marketing (CareerOne.com.au, 17 August, 2007).
  • Both advertisements mentioned that the ideal candidate should possess skills in HTML, CSS, and Flash. Business Catalyst also required the candidate to possess skills in Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Illustrator (Seek.com.au, 22 July, 2007). For the position offered by Hays Sales and Marketing, some other skills required are JavaScript, Dominos Designer, Acrobat and Lotus Notes/Lotus Script (CareerOne.com.au, 17 August, 2007).

Differences observed between that of a Senior Web Developer through employment agency gurus (Gurus.com.au, 2007) and Web Designer through mycareer (MyCareer.com.au, 13 July, 2007)
The Senior Web Developer job is a full time position, as opposed to the Web Designer job, which is a 6 month contract position.  There are different skills needed for both of these job ads.  The Senior Web Developer role requires more experience and a broader range of skills than that of the Web Designer job.  Both the Web Designer and Web Developer jobs require skills in things such as XML and the ability to produce technical and functional solution design, but the Web Developer job requires skills in SQL, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, database design.

One thing that is interesting to note is that the Web Designer job does not require applicants to have knowledge of Flash and Photoshop, which would be used for the design of the site, but the Web Developer job does.  This shows how Web Development can include Web Design aspects and vice versa, depending on the job specifications and organization structure.

Web designers can charge anything between $500 to $5000 for a website, sometimes even more. I don't have a reference because my web design teacher at RMIT told us that.

Many web designers/developers are expected to know XHTHL code nowdays as well. Its a cleaner version of HTML, and in conformance with the standards set by the World Wide Web Consordium (W3C). Some pages in HTML format don't appear the same in different browsers, web content may move etc. With XHTML, the website looks exactly the same on every computer its accessed on. For more information on XHTML code, go to http://www.w3schools.com/. You can also do some exercises involving XHTML.

I am still confused to find out the difference between a web designer and a graphic designer. Can anybody tell me are they carrying out the same roles and responsibilities; and do they need the same skill requirements?
