Differences observed

Different organisations may adhere to different IT service management guidelines such as ITIL.  Other IT service management guidelines may include CISSP, Security+, Apdex which take different approaches in providing quality service for customers.

In comparing the positions between Greythorn Recruitment and Davidson Recruitment it appears that the position of Senior Web Systems Administrator offered by Greythorn requires the applicant to have a broader knowledge of the company's network systems and applications in addition to the Web Administrators role. These include LDAP (Gracion Software, 18 August 2007), TCP/IP (Search Networking.com, 18 August 2007) and Sharepoint (SharePoint HQ, 18 August 2007). This position also outlined the need for experience with firewalls, which are used to prevent unauthorized access to system software or data on the network (Encarta.msn.com, 18 August 2007)

The position of Senior Web Administrator, advertised by Davidson Recruitment on the other hand appears to be more focused on the Web applications of the organisation with a lesser requirement for network based knowledge.

Different job listings may require different web technology knowledge.  For example for Monash requires demonstrated knowledge of webserver platforms Apache and IIS and demonstrated knowledge of web and internet technology, more specifically including XML, Perl, python and other Unix shell scripting, LDAP or related directory services, certificates, and javascript.  (Monash.edu.au, 21 August 2007)

On the other hand, the job role of senior web admistrator from Greythorn Recruitment requires experience with Apache, SunONE/SJS Web Servers, LDAP, IIS, ASP, .Net, Sharepoint, MS MCMS ,Tomcat/Jboss, Websphere or Weblogic and ISA Server. Technical competence will include Solaris Systems administration, including Perl, Shell Scripting and Unix utilities, sound knowledge of firewalls, TCP/IP and related tools and a sound knowledge of SQLPlus queries and supporting applications. (mycareer.com, 21th August)

Whereas the role of a webadminstrator will share commonalities in the need for knowledge in technical aspects of the web, there will be differences in the knowledge and experience required depending on the need of the organisation.
