Brief description

Project managers have versatile roles and can be found in any industry, whether in finance or manufacturing. In general, a project manager is given the responsibility for the overall success of the project.

The project manager has to accomplish tasks such as overall objectives, goals and budgets. Furthermore, they do not necessarily have to complete these tasks on their own and tend to manage a team of staff that assists with the completion of these jobs. Therefore, efficient and effective management is required from project managers because they are held accountable if the project is not performing well or a failure. (lifecyclestep.com, 2007).

A project manager is a facilitator. Their key role is to ensure that the members of their software project team are aware of their job and can perform it. A project manager works closely with management to ensure the required resources and support are provided. Often they will also be the team mediator who deals with team issues that impact negatively upon the teams productivity. Although PRINCE2 is recognised worldwide, many organisations do not use PRINCE2 due to the management overhead that they perceive is involved.  This perception is unfounded in many areas as PRINCE2 processes can be structured to suit the organisation.

Differences observed

Project Manager - Alcohole and other Drug (PM-AOD) for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (www.casa.gov.au/jobs/, 02 August 2007)

In contrast to the above position, this is a Commonwealth Government appointment. Most noticable is that the above position does not specify such things as the orginisation the applicant is applying for or specific projects they will be undertaking, just a outline of the tasks they will be performing (which would be arguably what most Project Managers wouldbe doing). This position explains specifically what the project is concerned with and what duties will be performed including programs they will be working on such as Drug and Alcohole Management Plans (DAMP), a background to the orginisation and how it impacts the position. The main advantage of this position is that an applicant can research their prospective employer, something that may be important to someone applying for a poition at this level. Other noticable differences of this position is:

-   the salary is much lower for public service positions $90,000 - $105,000+ (negotiable), noting that salaries for Project Managers are significantly above the average wage,

-  A project Manager is the senior member of the project team and requires strong leadership abilities, in contrast to a Project Officer who takes on a more supportive role,

-   describe the detils of the position concerned and that it concentrates on the implementation of a specified Legislation and Regulations (Civil Aviation Act and Civil Aviation Safety Regulations),

-   this position makes no mention of academic or tertiary qualification required where other positions require specific qualifications, and

-   the slection criteria is more relevent to their respective sub-headings.

Australian Tax Office Project Manager - Health people Management Review The main difference in the above job applications is that the project manager's duties and salary vary between industries and the departments within the industry.
The successful project manager for this allocated position will be responsible for:

  • Corporate occupational health and safety and wellbeing activities
  • Injury management with respect to compensable and non compensable injuries, and
  • Provision of advice to Tax Office employees on the above issues. In contrast to the above positions, this is a government position non ongoing for a period of 6 months, with possible extension.
To become an employee of the Australian tax office you must be an Australian citizen and pass the standard security clearance.
     In comparison:

  • This role also requires the project manager to work closely with other teams/departments within the Australian Tax Office.
  • The successful applicant will have to abide by regulatory framework and policies set by the Australian Tax office.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • The Selection Criteria complex, well evidenced examples are applicable.
  •  No academic qualifications are needed, however experience in the appropriate field is necessary.

Senior Project Manager - Managing Infrastructur

The main differences to the above job advertisements are that, the successful Senior Project Manager's duties and responsililties are:

  • Controlling systems design and project planning activities related to large applications and infrastructure   developments.
  • Controlling quality methodologies to ensure that IT solutions meet the required business and technical standards
  • Mentoring ICT employees on relevant project management methodologies that ensure a consistent, professional approach to all ICT projects.
  • Australian Residents ONLY (Mycareer.com.au, 16 August,2007)
    In comparison:
  • This role also requires the project manager to work closely with other teams/departments within the Australian Tax Office.
  • The successful applicant will have to abide by regulatory framework and policies set by the Australian Tax office.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • The Selection Criteria complex, well evidenced examples are applicable.
  • No academic qualifications are required, however experience in the appropriate field is necessary.
  • This role is a government position, non ongoing for a period of 6 months, with possible extension.
  • To become an employee of the Australian tax office you must be an Australian citizen and pass the standard security clearance.
  • No academic skills restriction, however experience on task is minimum requirements (www.gemteq.com.au,4th,August,2007)

  • For person to be a prject manager in W/sphere, you need to be Australian citizen or permanent residen (www.gemteq.com.au,4th,August,2007)

Other observations:

  • In answering Public Service Selection Criteria, it is difficult to know how much information is enough and how much is too much.  Some areas do not like to see more than half a page response to a question while others want greater detail.  This makes it rather difficult when responding to job advertisements and should be taken into consideration when applying for the above Commonwealth job.
  • Sometimes a job that is advertised already has someone acting in the position, and the process of advertising is only a matter of procedure and hence you may not get the job unless you are an exceptional candidate in comparison to the acting incumbent.

Project Manager - Managing Investments

In contrast to some of the other advertisements posted up this job is based on a 12 month contract as opposed to full-time/permanent work offered from the other clients listed ont his page. To an extent, this could explain why the salary may be higher then the one's offered by other clients. Furthermore, this project management job is involved in the banking/finance industry, which tends to have higher salaries then other industries, therefore explaining the very high salaries offered.

In comparison to the public sector job from CASA, the salary offered by this client is twice the amount offered from the public service. CASA offers a salary of 90-105k whereas the banking client offers a salary of 208-234k.
Another explanation in regard to higher salaries offered by this client could be with the location of the job. Generally, this may have something to do with geographic location. Jobs in metropolitan Sydney tend to have higher wages when compared to Canberra. This may be due to a number of factors, but most notably the more expensive living expenses when living in inner Sydney.

Junior Project Manger

The differences, which I noted where

  • Salary, Graduates get one third of what other project managers get. Base salaries start at $40,000 [mycareer.com,18th,august,2007]
  • Work experience preferred is less than other project managers, normally 6-12 months for a graduate sometimes none.  [www.seek.com.au, 19th, August.2007
  •  On the job training is given to all entry level positions
  •  Roles and responsibilities are simmilar except in a less senior fashion.

Looks good so far, though there were a whole lot of web rerferences that were not referenced properley. The reference to seek.com.au isn't correct either. In-text referencing is good!

How much is the company looking for Project managers who have recently graduated paying them??? Not 130,000+ I hope particuly if their are doing further training!!

Desiree Karyn Cashman says:

Although this is true in most circumstances, some companies do offer good money and also provide training on areas that are specific to their company.  The initial posting with the advertisement from S2M was not for a recent graduate - it was for an experienced Project Manager.

Daniel Dojcinovski says:

Hello, Iv attached a the key responsibilities and selection criteria for a Project manager.
The PDF was sent to me by the Australian Government Office of the Employment Advocate. Have a look, it is very helpful.

Guem David Diing says:

Hi Daniel good work, the government agent who send out the project manager advert have gave all neccessary requirement inorder for any interested to apply in that position.

Daniel Man Phuong Hua says:

Hey guys, just added my contribution to this page... just gotta fix a couple of things, but how do you print what you have contributed?

Alyce Kelley says:

Hi guys
To print what you have contributed you need to go up to the left hand corner to "INFO" then in a box on the left hand side, there are names of people who have contributed if you hit "view changes" Then down the bottom were you log on under "other features" hit the printer icon. (If someone has a simplier way please let us know)
The brief description is very well researched, however a few descriptions just sound like the job advertisement, it does not actually define what a project manager is and the role that they will hold within the company if there application is successful.
Under qualifications in academic, it is probably important to put the job title or reference as it shows the differences in qualifications between an entry level project manager and a highly qualified project manager, it also highlights the difference in salary. It allows us to navigate through the a lot easier.

Desiree Karyn Cashman says:

I disagree with the first sentence under Brief Description which notes that project managers as also known as project coordinators and team leaders, as these are distinctive roles in their own right and not Project Manager roles.
