Network Support
Network support staff work with the users of an enterprise network to maintain and improve a business network. IT support staff are generally responsible for the maintenance of network hardware, infrastructure, operating platforms and generic end-user software, however they are generally less concerned with the maintenance of tailor-made end-user software. They provide critical integrated, secure and effective information and communications systems and services. (AFP 11June 2007)
Network support staff can be based in a particular location or as a roaming technician within an organisation. They may be required to provide customer support to the users and owners of network systems through various mediums ranging from telephone Helpdesks through to attending customer or client premises to provide physical assistance.

It seems that the base skills requirement for Network Support is generally uniform, and that specialisations seem to be foregone in favour of a greater general skills base. However one large difference is that some employers require a formal qualification while others only find it advantageous. More broadly though, employers seem to be looking for previous experience in troubleshooting and maintenance over an applicant with one or more specialised industry qualifications or a string of acronyms after one's name.

Simon Alexander Longworth says:Protection from black hat hackers? Is there such a thing?! |
Muhammad Taimoor Sultan says:trying to get a hold of it... added the job description... salary and the requirment part... |
Simon Alexander Longworth says:I edited the introduction, it appeared to be ripped straight from a website and was explaining the job requirements of a particular position at a particular firm, and the idea of the introduction is to provide a generic overview of job requirements. More later! Out of tute time. |
Siu Lun Chan says:Just added two lines of Applicants must have, to be more specified and added some references. |
Simon Alexander Longworth says:Brilliant! Does anybody have an idea what Organisation/Industry could be changed to? It doesn't make much sense to me |
u3017996 says:Perhaps it could be changed to Organisation's/Industry's seeking network support? though that still sounds odd |
Simon Alexander Longworth says:What do you think of what I've changed the heading to? I put a little blurb in there so it makes a little more sense, and removed Microsoft Partner, that wasn't exactly relevant. |
u3017996 says:I added a few requirments and a slightly different salary from an AFP job for network support. I also added a bit to someones differences and similarties, sorry if i wrecked it |
u873918 says:I've added some personal attributes to the bottom of the 'Applicants must have' from an AFP position advertised in June - Level 4 (Team Member). I've fixed some spelling also. I've been looking in the above links and haven't found any base level jobs in Network Support - how do people get experience for these type of jobs - is it just luck or do some organisations employ people on interest only and teach them up to this level? |
Jason Andrew Beer says:APS Level 4 (for your AFP reference) is pretty much entry level. Most APS Graduate Programs start at Level 5. |
Steven John Gallagher says:Added a few things for additional requirements, don't actually need the it degree but it helps a hell of a lot. plus a job listing for a post with Canberra Airport, needs to be copied and pasted but |
Brooke Elizabeth Falls says:I found a large amount of information regarding IT Helpdesk positions and have added a "child" page onto this page called IT Helpdesk Officer with alot of this info. It can be found by looking at the "info" page (click info on top right of screen) and then clicking on "IT Helpdesk Officer" under the heading "Hierarchy". Please feel free to look at and edit anything that needs changing. |
