This page hold the opinion/evaluation of tutorial on Monday 6.30 about the wiki space for peer learning.
How did you use the tool to work together to develop the IS Jobs Registry?
- division of labour --- students contributed to different sections
- Locate jobs according to your experience
- intentionally picked a job role that no one else picked; to contribute or provide new information about the job role
- using the comments to discuss issues with others, queries regarding referances
- you looked at an exsisting job role, contributed something new and then contributed again when new information came to light.
- option of rolling back to previous version was good.
- picked the role that nobody has done, dumped all information about role, then others reviwed and communicated with them.
- more accurately as you could check who has changed what.
- how many people have contributed to a job role
What is your most significant experience of using the wiki space?
- real time system so that user knows the latest version
- highlighted the differences between opensource and proprietary system
- never used wiki software before this. learning the usability of wiki was exciting
- met freinds through UCSpace student directory, used it to initiate contact
- found it convenient to see what others have done and correct errors
- people overwrite others work or assume that their contribution is correct and others is wrong.
- no social control over the way that people interated or wrote on UCSpace
- high-tech is not required, simple system, no bandwith problem
What are the good features of a wiki? Was it useful?
- live documents --- information was constantly changing
- revision history
- comments
- fewer requirements --- just need a browser
- real-time --- allowed users to see edits as they happened.
- no boundaries on user location
- accountability
- no legal bonds
- shows changes in colour
- people could take different roles with document editing and contribution
- formatting features
What are the bad features of a wiki?
- limited formatting features & control over layout
- problem with seperating content from presentation
- wont upload/ connect to homepage
- site was down ion first day
- reliability of info, not been tested, no credibility of information
- no formal methods of referencing were followed
- deletes /additions were done without referencing
- anonymous access made UCSpace open to vandalism or undesirable activity
- too much uneccessary formatting options like text colour etc..
- simultaneous editing of different sections on same document was not possible.
How did the wiki exercise helped you to learn from each other?
learn from other's ideas
more people could contribute in less time with a lot of different jobs which you could then research and compare
collaborator vs contributor style
from their references, comments
Did you had to change any existing ways of doing collaborative work?
context of collaboration, no shared intent, intention was to get good mark
you couldnt jump at people who made negative comments -- lack of angry emoticon!
could not leave things until last minute, waiting for others so had to do ahead of time
no rules or control over unwanted format
Are there any governance issues or concerns related to the use of wiki for teaching and learning?
whether the information is correct
if my contribution was changed, would i be able to track?
if people want to contribute or delete your work
moderation of comments
access-rights ---different rules
informal policies, best practices page
being able to lockout accounts
can others circumvent system?
How could such social technologies be used in future for teaching and learning?
use it as a research tool rather than assessment
use it as a discussion forum
use it as a communication tool to contact group members and share information
students to colloborate in unit outline
students contribute information or feedback about subject content
some students are shy or dont want to interact with others online
