Intelligence Analysts
Intelligence analysis is the application of individual and collective cognitive methods to weigh data and test hypotheses within a secret socio-cultural context (Warner, 2002). The person who undertakes these applications and collects data to produce secret information for intelligence department is an Intelligence Analyst. The monitoring of suspected information to detect potential threats for the country and communicating this information with security departments is the basic job of an intelligence analyst.
The job is offered in Canberra office of BPC in Intelligence Plans and Support Section*, so it is more of analyst job because they undertake complex intelligence tasks to support BPC operational planning and decision-making. The major duties and responsibilities are as follows.*
- Provide a leading role in development of intelligence work plans for portfolios addressing specific maritime security threats.
- Utilize and develop the use of a broad range of intelligence-related databases, tools and systems to conduct complex analysis and production.
- Develop subject matter expertise on specific maritime security threats.
- Conduct and guide small teams in complex research and analysis on current and emerging trends in relation to specific maritime security threats.
- Analyze a nation's ability to achieve specified wartime objectives, mobilize and sustain its armed forces or destroy strategic and tactical targets (DIA. 2007).
- Analyze the structures of government, political parties, national policies and foreign relations, and their impact on a country's defense doctrine, strategy, and military structure (DIA).
- Analyze transportation systems and networks and the assessment of production, inventory, and supply capabilities (Department of Transportation and Regional Services).
- Provide guidance and quality assurance in the compilation of intelligence products across the recognized maritime security threats in support of intelligence operations.
- Prepare and deliver a range of intelligence products and briefs for Customs, Defense, external clients and other government departments, agencies and committees.
- Represent department at various intelligence forums.
- Establish and foster working relationships with counterparts within the Australian Intelligence Community (AIC), other government departments, agencies, and industry.
- Manage intelligence collection and tasking requirements in support of BPC IC activities.
- Supervise and mentor intelligence analysts within BPC IC. Provide support to BPC regional offices. (BPC Job pdf, 2007)
The BPC Intelligence Centre (BPC IC) is responsible for providing timely security threat intelligence to inform and shape the planning and conduct of maritime surveillance and response operations in support of the Civil Maritime Surveillance Program. This is achieved through the provision of tailored maritime security threat intelligence reports and assessments to inform BPC, Defence, and other Government agencies.
The BPC IC consists of three functional work areas:
o Have a strong understanding of intelligence processes and capabilities
o Have a capability to analyze and interpret data in useful information.
o Have well developed skills with regard to detail,
o Possess strong research and analytical skills,
o Have well developed organizational and interpersonal skills,
o Be able to use advanced technology, and
o Be able to work as part of a multi-functional disciplined team.
o Must maintain secrecy of the department work.
All Applicant Officers are required to acquire and maintain a Customs Security Clearance of TOP SECRET.
For working in the army you have to be a citizen or a permanent resident with proof that you have applied for citizenship and you have to take an aptitude test
