Hello and welcome to all our new and current Golden Key members at UC.
We had a good turn-out at our recent information session in the Law Foyer last Tuesday 20th February with around 40 prospective members coming along to find out more about Golden Key. Thanks to all those that attended and we hope to see you at the Induction Ceremony on Monday 26th March.
This UCSpace can be used by all to discuss ideas, ask questions and generally chat with other people.
We try to update our website (canberra.edu.au/goldenkey) as regularly as possible but we have limited control on how soon information is uploaded to it. However, this UCSpace is an interactive space which provides a more immediate relay of messages and information between all of us - we can hear from you too. So feel free to contribute, we'd love to hear what you have to say.
I received my invitation on the day that the period for accepting and paying ended (I'm pretty sure that's what the letter said anyway!). Am I still able to become a member of GK?
Please let me know. My email address is y.kyngdon@student.canberra.edu.au.
Awesome. I was sick for the induction ceremony and will have to work through the AGM, which is making my participation in GK somewhat limited so far, since I've only just joined, but having this up means I'll be able to stay somewhat up to speed regardless
I hope you didn't have the horrible virus that's been going around, a couple of us have felt pretty rotten with it!
Shame you missed the induction, it went really well and it was great to hear from our new VC and know that he supports Golden Key.
Also a shame you won't make it for the free drinks and pizza at the AGM - we'll be thinking of you!
I'll add any news or upcoming events to this site so that you can keep up to speed with what's happening.
We're planning a few events for this year, so hopefully you'll be able to participate in some of those.
The Exec tries to meet regularly and I'm assuming the new exec members will keep that going, so you could always come along to one of those to find out what's going on too.
Once the equivalent of one year's full-time study has been completed, if the student falls within the top 15% of their degree course, they are automatically invited to join Golden Key. GK is a society which recognises academic excellence. It's not elitist though, rather it acknowledges academic achievement. A Golden Key member is then eligible to apply for scholarships supplied by Golden Key and their sponsors/partners as well as gaining access to career opportunities and useful networking groups and activities, including regional and international conferences. Golden Key also involves its members in community service, and supporting charity organisations. Overall, Golden Key encourages the individual to fulfill their potential. Their major tagline is : "Recognition for success, Keys to the future".
LATEST NEWS LATEST NEWS LATEST NEWS LATEST NEWS* * Our AGM will be held at 6pm on Wednesday 4th April in the Ngunnawal Centre, Ground Floor, Building 7 at UC.
All members of Golden Key are welcome to the AGM, even if you do not wish to nominate yourself for a position on the Executive Committee.
If you do wish to nominate for a position, or to create a new position suitable to your skills, please email details to goldenkey@canberra.edu.au by Monday 2nd April. For information on what positions are currently held, see our website: http://www.canberra.edu.au/goldenkey/uc/executive.html
Freepizza and drinks will be served at the AGM for all GK members to enjoy.
It was great to see so many of the new members at the New Member Reception Ceremony on Monday 26th March.
We hope to see many of you again at the AGM along with some of the longer standing members.
Just a quick word regarding the AGM next week. If the words 'free' and 'pizza' haven't sparked your interest enough, a) I'm shocked! and b) come along just to check out what GK is all about. As a member of the exec last year I found quite rewarding and not a great deal of work. Just a few meetings and events and we got gold status. With your help we can do it again, and as cliched as it is, many hands make light work. So the more of you that help out, the less you'll need to do. Whatever you're interested in, there is a place there for you (or we can make one up!). So if you're umming and ahhing because you want to do something but you're not sure what, come check it out. It's a very rewarding experience......free......pizza....
Just to give you all some idea of possible exec officer positions, I've attached a document that lists what is generally expected within a chapter. However, the positions and duties are not set in concrete, they can be adapted to the individual. Go to the Attachments tab at the top of the page to locate the document.
Thanks to the members that attended our AGM this evening. Great to see you there.
Thanks to those that gave their apologies in not being able to attend.
We now have a new Executive Committee in place.
Barbara is our new president and she will send a message out soon with more details about the AGM, the committee members and our new advisors.
A special thanks to our out-going president, Anthony, for all his hard work and great team-building skills that produced an extremely active year for GK@UC with wonderful results - we got GOLD standard! What an achievement. Thanks, Anthony.
Congratulations to Barbara on becoming president, well-deserved. A guarantee that UCGK is again in good hands.
Good luck for everything in the future Anthony, and thank you again for all you did last year.
I hope everyone's enjoying the class-free period, and I look forward to meeting the new exec properly! It was great to see the interest and enthusiasm I hope will last throughout the rest of the year.
As some of you might be aware- myself and Angela Hunt have started an Oxfam Group called ALLIES.
We are a not for profit group that supports Oxfam by coordinating events around the ACT.
Our first event is called ATTENTION: All ALLIES and is on April 28th at Jamison Inn.
Attached is some information on our group, how you can get involved and how to contact us.
More importantly, attached is the Poster for the gig. [SEE ATTACHMENTS PAGE]
$10 entry for 11 local and interstate bands- not bad value if you ask me!
ALL PROCEEDS GO TO OXFAM.
The gig also kicks off Fair Trade Fortnight in the ACT.
We are hoping for a sell out show- but we need your help.
Please forward this email and the attachments onto EVERYONE you know!
We'd appreciate it if you could help us get the word out.
If you know of any businesses, local bands, venues or initiatives that would like to give us a hand- please let us know. I'm sure i don't have to explain the difficulties that we encounter being volunteers of a not for profit organisation!
We have plans for more events during the year- so stayed tuned for the ALLIES Revolution!
All members, please see below a message from head office calling for applications for two awards in particular:
Deadline is 15th June, so not much notice, I know, but if you have time, and you think you qualify for an award, please send your application in.Dear Chapter Presidents, Following up on our recent updates and information regarding the new Asia-Pacific awards for regional Golden Key members. There are 4 awards with deadline of 15th June Postmark approaching. We have received a good response for our Distance Education Award, and also for our Study Abroad Award. However, to date the quality of applications we have received for two other awards is not of a sufficiently high caliber, and we would like your assistance in encouraging more members to apply. These awards are: Contribution to Campus Life AwardAlumni Community Service Award We believe you are in an ideal position to direct information to members who have made an active contribution to Campus Life and in Community Service and who therefore should be encouraged to apply. Perhaps the selfless nature of these two awards may indeed require you as chapter presidents to 'nominate' or encourage an active participation by a worthy member. If you know of a member you believe would qualify for these two awards, please suggest to them that they apply. The link for the awards is as follows: http://www.goldenkey.org/GKweb/ScholarshipsandAwards/ScholarshipandAwardListing/AustraliaandNewZealandRegionalAwards.htm The information on these award is: Contribution to Campus Life AwardAn essay of no more than two pages describing your efforts in contributing to campus life through organizing events or otherwise contributing to campus ambiance. Alumni Community Service AwardAn essay of no more than two pages describing how your university career prepared you for life after university and how you have been involved in community service/volunteering since leaving university.
