Secondary citations

  • Let's say you want to cite a reference, Darwin (1898). If you haven't consulted the original, but instead have consulted a secondary source, e.g., Smith (2000), then you would do something like this:
    • The theory of evolution (Darwin, 1989, cited in Smith, 2000)....
  • Your reference list should then only include Smith (2000).
